While the housing industry has been a bright spot during the pandemic-spurred economic crisis, many housing experts warn that the policies passed to fuel recovery could see a widening in the gap in homeownership between Black and white Americans. Experts note that mortgage providers tightening their lending standards could hurt Black Americans’ ability to finance home purchases, lowering the number of homes owned by Black Americans. “The opportunity for people to use this as a time to transition into buying is probably going to be less for Blacks. How great that difference is, it’s too early to say,” said Harvard Join Center for Housing Studies Managing Director Chris Herbert.
