Life insurers now hold nearly $1 trillion in private debt, placing state insurance commissioners in an increasingly important role to monitor complex investments. The NAIC is ramping up oversight efforts, with Iowa’s insurance commissioner Doug Ommen and Iowa insurance division’s chief investment specialist Carrie Mears playing key roles in establishing a consistent regulatory framework across state-based insurance bodies to regulate financial instruments and oversee assets held by insurance companies.
