Following the restart of student loan payments on May 5, many seriously delinquent student loan borrowers are now in collections. These borrowers will begin receiving notices from the Treasury about the withholding of certain federal benefits, while some defaulting borrowers may see wage garnishment as soon as this later this summer. The Wall Street Journal reports that restarting student loan payments may put additional pressure on the budgets of some borrowers who have not paid their student loan debt for some time, especially in the face of a tougher economy.
