On November 18, the Trump administration announced a plan to continue dismantling the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). Previous responsibilities of the U.S. DOE will be divvied up among other existing U.S. federal agencies, including the Labor Department, Department of Health and Human Services, State Department and the Department of the Interior. Currently, the U.S. DOE oversees a $1.6 trillion federal student loan portfolio and while nothing concrete has been released, administration officials have explored options to sell some of the debt into the private sector.
