On October 3, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed as speaker of the House by both sides of the aisle, as eight Republicans joined all Democrats in a historic 216-210 vote to vacate the seat. This comes as McCarthy brokered a deal over the weekend to avoid a shutdown, which will keep the government funded until November 17. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Chair of the House Financial Services Committee has been named speaker pro tempore, until a new leader is elected. The Republican conference will meet next week to discuss replacements for the seat with House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) already vying for the nomination.
