On April 18, the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing with FHFA Director Sandra Thompson and Acting HUD Secretary Adrianne Todman, titled “Oversight of Federal Housing Regulators.” Members from both parties focused their attention on the ongoing housing affordability crisis in the U.S. Democrats expressed concern about institutional investors buying up homes and they also urged the FHFA to ensure that the FHLBs fulfill their affordable housing mission. Republicans were critical of the housing agencies’ initiatives on energy efficiency and DEI and emphasized the need to reduce bureaucracy within the agencies.
