JP Cunniff

Vice President, Policy & Regulatory Affairs

JP Cunniff joins the Structured Finance Association as Vice President of Policy & Regulatory Affairs, where he supports the organization’s regulatory and public policy initiatives. In this role, he leverages nearly a decade of experience at the intersection of financial services and government to translate complex policy developments into clear, actionable insights for clients and stakeholders.

JP has eight years of experience across management consulting and federal government service, with a focus on regulatory, political, and policy issues in the financial sector. He is recognized for his analytical research, critical reading, and persuasive writing skills which are strengths that have enabled him to advise C-suite executives and government officials on emerging legislation, regulatory reforms, and industry trends. Throughout his career, he has led large teams, launched and scaled new programs, and served as a liaison between senior leadership and federal regulators and policymakers while cultivating strategic partnerships across agencies and organizations.

Prior to joining SFA, JP was an Investment & Policy Vice President on Capstone’s Financial Services team, where he advised institutional investors and corporate clients on the impact of public policy and regulatory developments on investment strategies. He conducted both investment and policy analysis across a range of industries, producing due diligence reports on key policy developments and assisting on in-depth regulatory analyses for capital markets, private equity, and corporate clients.

Earlier, JP served as a Financial Institution Policy Analyst in the Federal Reserve’s Novel Activities Supervision Program. In that role, he monitored regulatory trends, managed project managements initiatives for the program, and conducted in-depth analyses to help inform internal policy discussions. He led and assisted on policy memos, briefing notes, and research papers on fintech issues; engaged with C-suite executives at fintech and Banking-as-a-Service companies on policy and responsible innovation; and coordinated cross-functional reports and presentations for senior leadership and the Board of Governors.

He began his career in management consulting, spending six years at firms including Accenture, Protiviti, and Guidehouse. He spent the majority of that time at Accenture, where he was part of the Finance & Risk and Payments Strategy & Innovation practices. During his time in consulting, he advised financial services clients on regulatory consent orders and conducted fintech and payments-related market research. He also contributed to thought leadership pieces, policy research reports, and white papers on legislative and regulatory issues, and analyzed emerging laws and regulations to help clients understand how developments in Washington could impact their industry.

JP holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management, with a minor in Information Systems, from Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management. Raised in the Washington, D.C. area, he now lives in Vienna, Virginia. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf at his home course.
