On April 18, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler testified before the House Financial Services Committee (HFSC). The hearing was well attended by both parties. Republicans primarily focused on the Commission’s sweeping rulemaking agenda, including the proposed climate disclosure rule and regulation of digital assets. Democrats, however, largely expressed support for Gensler’s policy initiatives and defended the need for climate change disclosure. Other discussion topics included the private funds rule, recent bank failures, FTX collapse, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Additionally, Gensler was pressed by Republicans on the recently re-proposed rule on Conflicts of Interest in Securitizations and its impact on ABS markets. In response, Gensler noted he will send written answers to additional questions posed by Committee members.
