Senate Holds Nomination Hearings for Top Officials

Published on January 11, 2022

On Tuesday, January 11, the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing on the re-nomination of Jerome Powell to serve a second term as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. While Powell has support from both political parties and is expected to be confirmed, he faced criticism for the spike in inflation over the last year. Additionally, on Thursday, January 13, the Senate Banking Committee considered Lael Brainard to serve as Vice Chairman for the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors and Sandra Thompson to serve as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Questions directed at Brainard focused on inflation and the Fed’s ability to do climate stress testing within its mandate. Thompson was asked questions concerning GSE conservatorship as well as the lack of affordable housing.
