With President Trump recently weighing in on social media regarding the privatization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, policymakers – including FHFA Director Bill Pulte, Treasury officials, and Members of Congress – are evaluating options for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the GSEs) in a post-conservatorship scenario. According to Politico, lawmakers are exploring how to take the GSEs public while maintaining some level of government control that has existed throughout Conservatorship. House Financial Services Housing and Insurance Subcommittee Chair Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE) indicated that his working group will likely hold broader discussions on the future of the GSEs in Q1 2026.
