According to Bloomberg, the Trump Administration had conversations about selling 5 to 15 percent of stock in the GSEs through an initial public offering in hopes to raise $30 billion. Currently, Fannie Mae’s and Freddie Mac’s shares sell over the counter where prices are unpredictable. President Trump has been in touch with financial industry leaders and relevant government officials to devise a course of action. In an August 14 interview, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that GSEs and housing affordability will be part of his big project this fall.
