In her remarks before the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday January 19, Dr. Janet Yellen discussed the need for another significant economic stimulus package in order to combat the negative effects of the pandemic. Dr. Yellen said that the Biden administration will prioritize providing aid to families, businesses and communities impacted by the pandemic and the economic downturn in addition to expenditures needed to manage and mitigate impacts of the virus. The package will include funds for more stimulus payments, extended unemployment benefits, relief for small businesses and a nationwide vaccination program. “We need to make sure that people aren’t going hungry in America, that they can put food on the table, that they’re not losing their homes and ending up out on the street because of evictions,” Dr. Yellen said. “We really need to address those forms of suffering, and I think we shouldn’t compromise on it.”
