On Monday, the World Bank predicted that 2020 would see the first increase in global poverty since 1998. Economists at the World Bank calculate that the COVID-19 crisis will push 40 – 60 million people into extreme poverty worldwide, with the “best estimate being 49 million.” Global poverty – the percentage of the world’s population living on less than $1.90 a day – is expected to rise from 8.2% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2020, a jump from 632 million people to 665 million people. Previous numbers predicted a decline from 8.1% to 7.8% in 2020.
