On Monday, June 29, the Supreme Court ruled 5 – 4 that the President has the authority to fire the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at will but did not go as far as saying the CFPB’s structure was unconstitutional. “The CFPB’s leadership by a single individual removable only for inefficiency, neglect, or malfeasance violates the separation of powers,” wrote Chief Justice John Roberts affirming the decision.
