Last week, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac suspended foreclosures and evictions as a response to COVID-19. While the move only benefited those who own a home, this week, Fannie and Freddie have turned to protecting renters. Specifically, Fannie and Freddie will offer mortgage forbearance to multifamily property owners on the condition that they suspend all evictions for those who cannot pay because of the coronavirus. When announced, Freddie Mac said that it anticipates that the decision could provide relief for up to 4.2 million U.S. renters across more than 27,000 properties.
