Hospitality and Healthcare Workers are Leaving Jobs in Record Numbers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS) report, released January 4, tallied 6.3 million total separations in November, matching the record set in September. The hospitality industry saw over a million quits that month along with increased exits of healthcare workers. Job hiring continued with 6.7 million in the same month. This indicates, according to Heidi Shierholz, chief economist at the Economic Policy Institute, that “People who quit are taking other jobs, not leaving the workforce.”
